the least of these

mighty to save
change the atmosphere
heal our land
bold words sung heartily

and yet
my heart holds back
uncertain of such assurances
in the face of
the tormented, traumatized, and trampled

i want miracles of manna
just rain it down already

instead
you send
a mustard seed
it’s all you say i need
it’s all i have to offer

to the smallest
promise for life
i return
a thousand times over

planted long ago
in the heart of a loving Father
in the turned and tossed soil
in the lashing rain
in the driest of droughts
with me
